Why we made it

Whey prices have risen massively over the past couple of years. Every brand you know has quietly put prices up or shrunk the tub. Rather than sell whey at a loss, or pass that cost on to you, we retired it.

In its place: Serious Protein. Soy protein isolate, skimmed milk, casein and glutamine peptides, blended in our own factory in Manchester — 24g of protein in every 30g scoop, the same as the premium tubs, for 78p a shake in the 500g.

That's it. That's the product. No influencer, no hype, no proprietary matrix. Real fuel for hard work.

What you get in a scoop

Protein 24g protein from soy protein isolate, skimmed milk powder, casein and glutamine peptides
Energy 107-110 kcal, 0.3g fat, 2.1-2.7g carbs
Sugar No added sugar*, no thickeners, no maltodextrin
Allergens Suitable for vegetarians. Contains soy, milk and gluten (wheat)

Protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass.

*Contains naturally occurring sugars (lactose from the milk powder).

Is it as good as whey?

Protein is protein. What matters is whether it has the amino acids your muscles need, and enough of them. Soy protein isolate scores 1.0 on the PDCAAS scale, the same top mark as whey and casein, and this blend adds milk protein on top of it.

In the trials that put soy against whey over 6-12 weeks of training, people gained the same muscle and strength on either: a 2018 meta-analysis of nine studies found no difference, and a 2020 randomised trial matched for leucine found the same.1,2

Will soy mess with my testosterone? No. The largest analysis on the subject pooled 41 clinical studies and measured testosterone in 1,753 men: no effect of soy protein or isoflavones on total testosterone, free testosterone or oestrogen, at any dose or duration.3 If someone tells you otherwise, ask them for their study.

How to use it

250-300ml of cold milk in the shaker first, then one level scoop (30g). Shake hard for 30 seconds, let it settle, shake again. Milk is how to get the best taste out of it — it's what makes it taste like a proper milkshake, not a chalky shake.

After training, at breakfast, the mid-afternoon gap, the drive home. Any time the day needs 24g of protein. The pack says any, pre, intra, post, and it means it.

What it isn't

It isn't whey. It isn't vegan (there's milk in it). It isn't gluten-free (the glutamine peptides come from wheat protein). It isn't a meal replacement. And it isn't for kids: it's a food made for adults, and anyone under 18, pregnant or nursing should check with a qualified health professional first.

Questions people ask

Is it whey?

No. Serious Protein is a blend of soy protein isolate, skimmed milk powder, casein and glutamine peptides. It gives you the same 24g of protein per 30g scoop as a whey concentrate, at a fraction of the price whey costs this year.

Why soy?

Because it's a complete protein (all nine essential amino acids, PDCAAS score 1.0, the same top mark as whey and casein) at a price that lets us sell a 24g-protein shake for 78p. We add skimmed milk and casein for taste, texture and slower-digesting milk protein. Whey would have cost you three times as much this year.

Will soy affect my testosterone?

No. The largest analysis on the subject pooled 41 clinical studies and measured testosterone in 1,753 men: no effect of soy protein or isoflavones on total testosterone, free testosterone or oestrogen, at any dose or duration (Reed et al., 2021). It confirmed a 2010 meta-analysis that found the same. If someone tells you otherwise, ask them for their study.

Does it build muscle like whey?

Protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass, whatever the source, as long as it's complete and you get enough of it. In the trials that put soy against whey over 6-12 weeks of training, people gained the same muscle and strength on either (Messina et al., 2018, meta-analysis of 9 studies; Lynch et al., 2020, randomised trial).

How much protein do I need a day?

The sports nutrition consensus is 1.4-2.0g per kilo of bodyweight a day if you train, spread across three or four feeds of 20-40g (ISSN position stand, 2017). For an 85kg man that's roughly 120-170g a day. One scoop is 24g of it.

When should I take it?

Whenever you're short of protein. After training is the obvious one, but breakfast, the mid-afternoon gap and the drive home all count. The pack says any time, pre, intra or post, and it means it.

What's actually in it?

Soy protein isolate, skimmed milk powder, glutamine peptides (from hydrolysed wheat protein), casein, flavouring, cocoa (chocolate) or beetroot colour (strawberry), an anti-caking agent and sucralose. No thickeners, no maltodextrin, no added sugar (contains naturally occurring sugars). That's the whole list.

Is it gluten-free, vegan or halal?

No, no, and not certified. It contains wheat (the glutamine peptides are made from wheat protein), so it isn't suitable for coeliacs. It contains milk, so it isn't vegan, though it is suitable for vegetarians. It doesn't carry a halal mark.

Does it contain lactose?

A little, from the skimmed milk powder. The 1.4-1.8g of sugars per serving is essentially all naturally occurring lactose. If you're lactose intolerant, this isn't the one for you.

What's the sweetener?

Sucralose, a small amount. No sugar is added; the sugars on the label are the lactose from the milk powder.

Is it a meal replacement?

No. It's a protein shake: 107-110 calories, 24g protein, 0.3g fat. Add oats, fruit or milk if you want a meal.

Can my kids have it?

It's a food, not a medicine, but it's designed for adults. For anyone under 18, and for pregnant or nursing mothers, the label says check with a qualified health professional first, and we'd say the same.

Does protein powder expire?

Best before is printed on the lid: three years from production. Keep the lid on, in a cool, dry cupboard.

What should I mix it with?

Milk. 250-300ml of cold milk is what turns this into an actual milkshake, not just a protein shake — it's how the flavours (Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla) taste like the real thing. Liquid in first, then the scoop, shake hard for 30 seconds, let it settle, shake again.

Why is it so much cheaper than the big tubs?

Three reasons. It isn't whey, and whey has more than doubled in price in a year. We make it ourselves in Manchester, so nobody else's margin is in the tub. And we don't pay influencers to tell you it's good.

Where is it made?

In our own BRCGS-certified factory in Trafford Park, Manchester. We've made sports nutrition there since 2008.

How does the subscription work?

Pick a flavour, choose how often (every 2 weeks suits most people at a scoop a day), and we'll send it. Change flavour, skip a delivery or cancel any time from your account.

Why does it say no added sugar when there are sugars on the label?

Because we don't add any. The 1.4-1.8g of sugars per serving occur naturally in the skimmed milk powder (it's lactose). The law requires us to say 'contains naturally occurring sugars' next to the claim, which is what the asterisk on the tub is for.
